Description

Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, 1996: The U.S. Army's most extensive sexual abuse scandal on record is uncovered by Major General Robert Shadley. Known as GAM, or Game ala Military, an entire network of senior male instructors is in competition to sexually assault and exploit the young female trainees in their charge. Immersed in a battle unlike anything he d been trained to fight, Shadley must unravel the game, bring the players to justice, and get help for a record number of victims. Now retired, General Shadley continues to advocate for the estimated 19,000 military service members who are sexually assaulted each year. In this gripping story, he sheds light on a problem that s still sadly far from being solved, and provides lessons in real leadership through crisis.

While MG Shadley's book will resonate with those who has served in the modern day armed forces it also addresses the challenges senior business executives will face in their careers. It highlights the conflict between doing the right thing and protecting the organization. This book outlines a very sad time for the US Army and shows the price a strong and ethical leader paid when he uncovered what turned out to be an Army-wide problem of major proportions. It is not written in a tone of sour-grapes nor is it an attempt to name those that tried to use MG Shadley to placate special interests in Congress and outside organizations with an agenda. The reader will quickly pick up on who decided to scapegoat Bob Shadley to protect the Army and throw a bone to those in Congress calling for someone to blame. The lessons learned from this incident, so well outlined by the author, are applicable to any large organization. Standing up and doing the right thing is not always easy. This book should be mandatory reading for business executives. Yes, the author uses military acronyms but he does his best to explain their meaning and you can't write a book about the Army and not use the official jargon. it is an easy read.
