About the Artist It seems that every person involved in music feels compelled to compare a new band with an older one. Its always the same -- theres this new band and they sound like this other band. Usually when a band cant be compared to someone else its because they really dont sound like anything anyone would want to listen to in the first place. Well, one of the fun things about The Politics is trying to figure out what artist or artists they sound like. The good thing is that one by one a list of names will come to mind only to be followed by the inevitable nah. As one reviewer stated, The Politics blend 80s alternative -- when alternative really was alternative -- with 90s modern rock and 80s pop. The Politics have the energy and intensity of Seattle, but the music is anti-Seattle. The vocals have been described as exotic; chameleon-like and pushed up front for maximum pop impact. One reviewer characterized the lyrics as generation X, Y and Z. So lets go to the source. Vocalist / guitarist Andrew Strong describes the bands songs as simple pop lots of lines that repeat; melody and groove. Producer Brian Scammon admits that the music is weird for pop. The songs arent about love or your girlfriend or drugs or the joy of sex. The songs are about money, sex and death like you got them all at once -- and isnt that a bummer: die, climax and take your money to hell. Hence the title of the bands debut disc: Songs About Money, Sex and Death. Guitarist / vocalist Travis Turner describes the music as adrenaline pop mixed with Zen philosophy and Xanax (the prescription anti-anxiety medication). Whatever it is, the band really doesnt sound like anything out there: We hope we sound like what's happening tomorrow -- today -- and still manage to sound like yesterday. Its about the rush; Zen; Xanax and time travel.
