Description

Many believers accept traditional Christian sexual morality but have very little idea why it matters for the Christian life. In Faithful, author Beth Felker Jones sketches a theology of sexuality that demonstrates sex is not about legalistic morals with no basis in reality but rather about the God who is faithful to us.In Hosea 2:19-20 God says to Israel, “I will take you for my wife forever; I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. I will take you for my wife in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord.” This short book explores the goodness of sexuality as created and redeemed, and it suggests ways to navigate the difficulties of living in a world in which sexuality, like everything else, suffers the effects of the fall.As part of Zondervan’s Ordinary Theology series, Faithful takes a deeper look at a subject Christians talk about often but not always thoughtfully. This short, insightful reflection explores the deeper significance of the body and sexuality.

Years ago, a 40-something single friend posted a recommendation for this book, and I knew I had to read it. I mean, come on, if a SINGLE woman in her 40s is recommending a book about "sex," you know it's got to be unique. I was not disappointed!!This book shifted our verbiage and emphasis, as parents, in the raising of our children even while they were young. We talked a lot about how we can and should (and shouldn't!) use our bodies to glorify God. This included everything from sticking our tongue out at others ("Is that a good way to praise the Lord with your body?") to later discussions around modesty and intimacy. As a woman in America who was left disappointed by the "purity culture," I love how this book puts the emphasis on GOD'S faithfulness, not ours! It's now become a resource for our teenage daughters as they navigate their place in the Kingdom of God as women. It is teaching them to focus more on God's faithfulness (and our response to that ever-present faithfulness) rather than on cultural norms, both within and outside of the church.I really cannot recommend the book enough! We have given away dozens of copies of it over the years, and have engaged in incredible conversations of grace and healing as others have been impacted by its profound message.
