Description

Amazon.com These Gotham-born and -inspired club and hip-hop grooves and beats span from disco and rap to techno, including DJ Spinna's "Rock (Unplugged)," the Parallax Corporation's Kratfwerk/Gary Numan sound-a-like track, "Crocodiles in the Sky," and the Rapture's house-friendly "I Need Your Love." Serge Gainsbourg's Franco-tribal tech-tranced "New York USA" would have been at home in the city's Studio 54 and Plato's Retreat, while Boris Gardiner's "Melting Pot" is the type of Bohannon-style track that would been popular at the Disco Fever. Some of the selections, like DM & Jemini's "Here we Go Again," owe more to other places than the Big Apple, and other tracks in this set have, shall we say, colorful titles which need no interpretation as to what the music is made for. The title track swings with the Spanish Harlem heat that only NYC can generate. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Well! What can be said about New York - The Sex, The City, The Music?!?!This compilation starts off with a real proclamation of what is to come. It takes a journey through some of the most underated sounds in funk, electronica, and about seven other 'styles' that have defied categorisation for decades.I have found the entire compilation from petrol records to be very well produced, mixed, and composed. This is most certainly a CD that must be played loud through the car stereo; it WILL impress anyone who is an audiophile! On the other hand, it is just as at home in the loungeroom stereo, but one thing is for certain... there is no background music on this album! From the start, it points the listener in the direction of dance groove, and it doesn't let up. There are some bizzare additions to the mix, such as Black Moustache's 'TV Slut' and Serge Gainsbourg's New York USA (which I assume is added because of its title!), but all in all this is an outstanding compilation! Some outstanding tracks off the album are track 4 (I need your love - The Rapture), track 5 (Street Gang - Are Weapons), track 8 (Deceptacon - Le Tigre), and of course Princess Superstar's contribution with Disco D on track 9.If you like music, then you will like this CD.
